Recipe: Grilled Basil & Pepperoni Pizza w/Whole Wheat Crust

If you haven’t guessed by now, I love to grill so it seemed natural to grill pizza! I chose basil and pepperoni as my toppings but feel free to experiment and choose others.

Also of note, I used my bread machine to make my pizza dough.  If you don’t have one, try this whole wheat dough recipe and make yours the traditional way.  Happy grilling!

Recipe: Grilled Basil & Pepperoni Pizza

Serving Size: 4 personal-sized pizzas

Recipe:  Grilled Basil & Pepperoni Pizza


  • 12 oz. warm water
  • 1 clove of garlic, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 c all-purpose flour
  • 3 c whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 32 oz jar tomato sauce (or make your own!)
  • 1 large bag shredded mozzarella
  • pepperoni slices
  • fresh basil


  1. Remember, these dough instructions are for my Oster bread machine! Place in bread machine in this exact order: water, chopped garlic, salt, vegetable oil, all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour into the bread pan of your bread machine.
  2. Make a small dent in the flour and add yeast. It's important to keep the yeast away from the liquids in the beginning.
  3. Close lid, select dough setting and that's it until the cycle completes! Mine takes approx 90 minutes.
  4. Remove dough from the bread machine and knead on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Preheat grill to medium-high.
  6. Break dough into four equal pieces and roll with a rolling pin (or toss it, like a pro, if you know how to!)
  7. Lightly brush dough with olive oil and place directly on the grill grate, flipping after 3 or 4 minutes.
  8. Add a layer of tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni and basil
  9. After 4 or 5 minutes, remove from heat, slice and savor. We sure did!
